How to Lower AC Bills
Summer is just around the corner so now is a great time to do some work around the house in order to lower your cooling bills. Air conditioning can cost hundreds of dollars each month and by doing some planning and quick maintenance on your home, you can save a bundle. Here are some tips on saving on your electric bills.
Two ways that the cool air escapes from your house are through your windows and doors. Make sure that your windows are insulated well and that you have curtains or blinds to help keep the strong sunlight from raising your homes interior temperature. Doors are also important. A door that is not insulated or is misaligned can let cool air escape outside. Make sure that your doors are closed and insulated.
As far as your air conditioners themselves, don’t forget to check the filters if needed. Dirty filters mean your system has to run harder, reducing efficiency and raising operating cost.
Fans are another useful tool to help keep your home cool. If you own a home with multiple floors, consider installing attic fans. Attic fans drive the hottest air out of house and can cool your home by several degrees. Attic fans are usually easy to install and quite affordable. You can usually install an attic fan in just a couple of hours. If possible, refrain from cooling rooms that are seldom occupied. Also, when leaving your home unoccupied for more than a few hours, be sure to raise the themostat, or turn off your AC. There’s no reason to cool an empty house.
