DePaul University
When deciding which College or University to attend there are many factors to consider. Some of the big ones are cost, location and reputation. Although the cost of attending a private school such as DePaul University is quite a bit higher than a state school, what sold me about this school were its beautiful Chicago campus and its commitment to diversity and the community.
DePaul is located north of downtown Chicago in the trendy Lincoln Park neighborhood. Campus housing consists of both traditional dorms, and more independent apartments. DePaul provides a U-Pass for a nominal fee, which allows students unlimited access to the “L” train, as well as to CTA busses. The U-Pass allows you to travel to virtually any part of the city for free. You can go to Wrigley Field for a Cubs game, the Aragon Ballroom for a concert, Michigan Avenue for a shopping spree, the possibilities are endless.
DePaul University was named after St. Vincent DePaul and to this day the college tries to instill in its students a sense of Vincentian spirit. This means giving back to the community and accepting other cultures and viewpoints. They do this by encouraging students to become involved in programs such as habitat for humanity, and by requiring freshman students to enroll in a class that teaches how Chicago has been shaped by different historical movements.
The quality of education that DePaul provides is easily the most important benefit of attending such an amazing institution. Most, if not all, of the professors at DePaul have been out in the real world working in the area that they are teaching. My Principles of Advertising professor used to work at Leo Burnett, my Market Research professor worked on the Big Red campaign “kiss a little longer.” These are dynamic, passionate people that have had successful careers and are now emparting their wisdom onto a future generation.
The experience that a student gets from DePaul University goes far beyond the classroom. This school encourages students to learn who they are by exploring the abundance of culture throughout Chicagoland. They provide a world-class education in the middle of a world-class city.
